[Message from the Author][Web-Site Navigation][Q & A][E-Mail Me]
| Welcome to the all new Doom
Underground! We're trying our best to get this site up and running. You may notice
some problems with some pages being either un-available or incomplete. Rest assured
that we are on top of things and will get these problems taken care of as soon as
possible. One thing to mention about this website is that it is exclusively dedicated to Doom/Doom ][ and the Ultimate Doom. We're not trying to say that the Doom series are the only games in town. And yes... it's quite antiquated by the new standards of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, but there are a jillion sites for these, many of which would be hard to top. So we won't try. Doom set the stage for these games and is still played on millions of computers, world-wide. With all the concentration on these new games, I felt it was important to fill the hole that has been left, and renew the luster of the most classic PC game of all time. -Matthew Parrish |

| Page Topic | Description |
| FAQ's & Information | FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Question. This is a popular media that generally answers questions in a Question/Answer format. Most go beyond that to be a complete tutorial with step-by-step instructions. |
| Help Desk | This webpage. Help with navigation and understanding terminology |
| Download Levels | This forum allows you to view descriptions of levels before you download. Included are ratings (sorry, just my personal opinions...), file-size, and links to both the levels themselves, and the author's credit text. If you are not sure about a level, make sure to click on the Author's Credit link as it might be of some help in it's more detailed description of the level(s). |
| Cheat Codes | I wouldn't even include this, except if I don't, I know that about half of you will bombard me with email requesting it. Includes a warning about using cheat codes (my personal insight on the subject) These are codes that you can type in on the keyboard while in gameplay. They can affect everything from your vulnerability, to weapons, to ability to walk through walls. |
| Other Sites | This forum is dedicated to all the other Doom/Doom ][ and Ultimate Doom sites out there. If you have a site in mind, please email me the link at mparrish@teleport.com, with DOOM LINK in the subject line. I'll review each one as I get the chance. I'm not going to bog this forum with a million sites to choose from (simply too much for everyone to get to visit), so if you don't get picked for this forum, or you don't like my review of these sites, don't take it personally. I'm sure I probably wouldn't give my own site a link. :) If you don't get selected, you may re-submit your request if and after you have improved the site. |
| Patches & Upgrades | This page is for upgrading your current version of Doom 1 and Doom 2. If you have the Ultimate Doom, don't bother.. you're already upgraded to Doom 1 engine 1.9. If on the other hand, you're running an original shrink-wrap version of Doom ][ 1.666, you might want to do a patch upgrade on it. There are several improvements on each patch upgrade that might be worth your while. If you have the shareware version of Doom and want an upgrade patch to 1.9... don't bother... it doesn't exist. However, you can download the whole shareware program in our Shareware D/L page. |
| Shareware D/L | This is for all the non-third party/non-utility shareware games/upgrades. Included is the original shareware episode of Doom 1 and the awesome new Doom 95! |
| The Connection | Coming Soon! This forum is not fully conceived at the time of this writing, but is expected to contain a chat forum for connecting with other gamers on-line... in real time, as well as a connection posting feature that will allow you to publish your name, phone-number (optional), email addresses, and any other info that would be helpful for finding others in your area who would like to deathmatch it out with you. Check back often for this forum... I expect it to be completed sometime in November, 1997. |
| Frontends & Misc | This forum is downloading Frontends for playing the Doom series. An important, and unfortunately, largely overlooked by id Software in the beginning, these programs allow you to easily configure Doom to run to do everything to control your environment, to connect up by serial/modem to other players. The misc section is for anything else that doesn't fit into the other categories. |
The following questions and answers are in direct response to the most frequent questions that have been emailed to me over the years. They probably won't answer everyone of your questions, but it should answer your basic ones.
Q: Where can I download a shareware version of Doom ][?
A: You can't. Only the original version of Doom 1 came in a shareware version, containing just the first episode of the 4 episode registered version. This same episode is available in the new Doom 95.
Q: How do I run a add-on level?
A: This is simply done by typing doom -file filename.wad
where doom is replaced with doom2 in Doom ][ and filename is
replaced with the name of the wad you wish to run. For example, to run the igor9.wad
in Doom 2, you would type
doom2 -file igor9.wad. Other parameters can be used in addition to
this to affect game play. Refer to the Command Line Parameters found in the
FAQ's & Information page.
Q: My CD (or diskettes) that Doom (or Doom ][) came on is corrupt. Can you email me a copy of this.
A: Please don't ask this question. My email filter will just garbage this before I even see it. I cannot and will not send anyone copies of any version of Doom. If you're CD or disks are bad, contact id Software at http://www.idsoftware.com and ask them what to do.
Q: How do I play the Doom series over a modem?
A: A vast array of frontends (including Doom 95) exist that ease your way into going cyber with Doom. If you don't want to do this, you can simply type DM at the doom directory, and the built-in Death Manager will allow you access to this feature.
Q: I only have a 14,000 baud modem? Is this fast enough to play Doom over a modem?
A: Yes... actually Doom only requires a 9600 baud connection and anything over that is overkill. You must, however, have the correct initialization string in order to play. DM.EXE accesses a bunch of modems initialization strings that are built in, however if yours isn't listed, try the Generic 9600 or Generic 14,000. If that still doesn't work, contact your modem manufacture for the correct initialization string. Generally, you will want to make sure that you have compression and flow-control turned off.
Q: Can play add-on levels with the shareware episode of Doom 1.
A: No, and don't try it. id Software provided this version as a test-drive version only. If you wish to play add-on levels, buy a copy of the registered version. You can download all the id Software games (full registered) right off their site at http://www.idsoftware.com in the Shopping Maul area. This is a chargeable download, however.
Q: Can I make my own levels for Doom/Doom ][?
A: Absolutely! Many great third-party programs have been made for you for this very purpose. This is truly what makes games like Doom so popular. Just remember, that it is a steep learning curve for most beginners, regardless of the program that you use. Start simple and accept that your first levels will suck. We've all done it! You can get these editors in the Utilities D/L section of this web site.
Q: Can I cheat in deathmatch mode?
A: I couldn't begin to count how many times this question has come up. It eludes me as to why anyone would want to stoop so low, but the short answer is no. Not without a hack, anyways. The main reason is that Doom/Doom ][ relies on consistant information between users. If you have a cheat hack on your side, then you're friend will have to have the matching code on his side. Anyways, it's really about the only thing lower than cheating against monsters. So don't do it. If you're tired of getting fragged all the time, stop cheating when you 're practicing by yourself, or get an easier partner.
Q: What do I do once I've created a level (PWAD) and want to distribute it on the Internet?
A: First of all, don't send it to me... I just don't have the FTP space to house it. Secondly, get yourself an FTP program (like WS FTP) and send it to ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/incoming. For further instructions on how to upload your program to this site, please see the ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/incoming/README.INCOMING file. There are many other public FTP sites that can house your level(s), but this is a good starting point. Often they will mirror your files over multiple FTP sites for best coverage. Once you file has been moved by their system administrators, you may send me the permanent link at mparrish@teleport.com.
E-Mail
If you have any question about this site please refer to the Website Navigation section up above before
emailing me. I can only handle so much email and if your question can be answered
here, then you will be better served, believe me. :)
If you have any comments, complaints, or bug-reports about this site and it's content,
please email me at mparrish@teleport.com
with Doom Underground Comment in the subject line. I will try to
either get back to you or fix the problem as soon as possible.
Finally, if you have any questions about Doom/Doom ][ or the Ultimate Doom, please refer to the Q & A section, or download one of the FAQ's available on this site. I cannot help you with strategy techniques or technical support questions that are better directed to id Software, or, again, to one of the many FAQ's available.
Thank you for you support on this project and I hope that it serves you well.
Sincerely,
Matthew Parrish
